Badminton Horse Trials is one of the toughest and most exciting equestrian events – the pinnacle of the worldwide horse trials calendar.
International horse trials are given a star grading according to their level of difficulty. Badminton is a 5* event, the highest grade and one of only 6 such events in the world. Badminton is the oldest (1949) and is generally regarded as the most prestigious event.
Horses and riders complete the competition over 4 days, each day consisting of a different discipline, Dressage on Thursday and Friday, Cross Country on Saturday before the finale Show Jumping on Sunday
The Badminton Horse Trials begins on Wednesday with a sense of anticipation and tradition. The key event is the first horse inspection, where each horse is presented before officials to ensure it is fit to compete – an elegant and quietly tense moment that marks the true start of the competition.
On Thursday, the competition moves into dressage, the first phase of eventing. Riders guide their horses through a series of precise, graceful movements in the arena, showcasing harmony, discipline, and control as the foundations of the leaderboard begin to take shape.
Friday continues the dressage phase, with the remaining competitors performing their tests. The atmosphere builds as scores tighten and standings become clearer, every movement carrying weight as riders position themselves ahead of the more demanding phases to come.
On Saturday, the energy shifts dramatically with the thrilling cross-country test. Horses and riders tackle a challenging course of solid obstacles across open countryside, testing bravery, stamina, and speed in what is often the most dramatic and decisive phase of the event.
Finally, Sunday brings the grand finale with the show jumping test, following the final horse inspection earlier in the morning. Precision and nerve are everything as riders jump in reverse order of standings, and the competition concludes with a tense, exhilarating finish and the crowning of the winner.
There’s no strict dress code at the Badminton Horse Trials, but dressing for the weather is essential. As an outdoor event, conditions can vary from bright sunshine to heavy rain, so practical clothing and sturdy footwear are a must—checking the forecast beforehand is always wise. Style still plays a big part, with some opting for relaxed outfits like jeans and knitwear, while others lean into smart-casual country fashion inspired by brands such as Fairfax & Favor or Dubarry. Take inspiration from the polished looks seen in the trot up—think chic, countryside elegance with tailored pieces, boots, and subtle statement layers for a refined finish.
